The Burning Question

The Burning Question is one of FTV's most innovative training videos. With this video we have broken away from the conventional training session and allows the trainer to assess the fire safety knowledge of their staff. The video is based around a questionnaire which is given out to the delegates and completed before the video is shown. The video is then shown which gives the answers.

The Burning Question is based around general fire safety i.e. fire evacuation procedures, fire prevention and fire-fighting equipment. The questions in the video are about subjects that staff will already have been trained in, with the questions as multiple choice or single word answers

A Warm Reception

To most people a hotel is somewhere where they go to have a meal, relax, or just to get a good nights sleep. The last thing that they will be thinking about is what they would do if a fire broke out. fires happen in hotels around the world, often claiming the lives of both the guests and staff. In the United Kingdom, Fire Legislation requires hotels, to ensure that all staff receive regular fire safety training, for day staff this must be carried out every six months and those staff who work nights this training must be carried out every three months.

A WARM RECEPTION was filmed on location at a modern hotel and includes a variety of subjects which include:

Raising the Alarm - The importance of operating the fire alarm before taking any other action. This section also covers the basic functions for the automatic fire alarm system.

Building Design - The basic concepts of building compartmentation and the importance of fire doors.

Calling the Fire Brigade - The correct procedure for calling the fire brigade and the information which should be passed to the fire brigade control room staff.

Fighting the Fire - The factors which must be considered before attempting to fight the fire, with an emphasis on safety.

Evacuating the Building - The importance of closing doors and windows, evacuating via stairways, not collecting personal property, knowing where to assemble etc.

Learn - Don't Burn

While it is vitally important to ensure all staff are aware of the procedures to be followed 'in the event of fire', this philosophy presumes that a fire is going to happen, yet successful fire prevention can reduce this likelihood significantly. Educating all staff in the prevention of fire is probably the most effective way of preventing fires in the workplace, yet as most fire prevention measures are common sense this important subject is often overlooked.

Learn - Don't Burn looks at the causes of fire and how they can be prevented. This 17 minute video is ideal for induction and regular training sessions.

Some of the subjects included in this video are:

Arson - is one of the main causes of fire in the UK today. It is an alarming fact that half the major fires in industry are caused by arson. This section of the video looks at ways of preventing arson or deterring the would be fire starter.

Electrical Faults - A large number of fires are caused through electrical faults. This section of the video explains the potential danger from overloading circuits and explains how to calculate the correct fuse for any appliance.

Contractors Operations - Refurbishment or building works often pose a significant fire risk. This section of the video explains the possible hazards and how to combat this threat.

Cooking Equipment - Kitchens potentially pose the greatest fire hazards in any premises. In this section advice is given on reducing the risk from fire in kitchens.

Rubbish/Waste - The build up of rubbish and waste significantly increases the chances of a fire starting. This section of the video offers advice on maintaining high standards of housekeeping. Flammable Liquids Covering: The correct storage of flammable liquids and some of the dangers they present.
